We are seeking to employ a candidate for the following position:
WATSAN Technician

Main purpose of the job:
Supporting the Watsan Supervisor in the implementation, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting of Water Hygiene Sanitation activities and infrastructure in the project according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population
Accountabilities: |

- Carrying out tasks directly related to the Watsan activities such as construction and maintenance of infrastructures in the project according to MSF protocols and standards concerning the operation of water supply, wastewater management, hygiene and infection control.
- Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of the Watsan structures.
- Identifying, recruiting, training and supervising daily labourers or hygiene agents for Watsan activities.
- Informing the Watsan Supervisor of any difficulties, anomalies and problems that may affect the normal functioning of activities and tasks in his/her area of responsibility, particularly with regards to accidents, incidents, damage, loss, theft or attempted break-ins.
- Assisting the Watsan Supervisor in Watsan data collection and reporting, as well as maintaining updated files and records of assigned project activities.
- Being responsible for equipment, tools, and consumables, verifying that they are safely used and maintained. Reporting to the supervisor any need of renewal and the weekly / monthly consumption

MSF CH/Context Specific Accountabilities
General:
- Reporting the need for maintenance, repairs and possible optimisations as well as for the improvement of the (occupational) safety of the WATSAN infrastructures, equipment and tools to the Supervisor.
- Carrying out first-level repairs and preventive and curative maintenance tasks on WATSAN equipment and tools autonomously (if applicable, using the documentation from the manufacturer).
- Writing maintenance and repair reports.
- Independently performing calculations necessary for the operation of the WATSAN infrastructures and equipment (eg, concentrations, dosing of reagents, pollutant load, cleaning performance, consumption of elctricity or reagents, hydraulic retention times etc.) and using the obtained results for the regular daily operation as well as to optimise the performance and the consumption of reagents.
- Wearing the PPE appropriate for the activities being carried out.
- Managing the stock of consumable items, of chlorine as well as of water and wastewater analysis materials, keeping stock cards up to date, carrying out inventories, preparing replenishment orders to avoid any shortages and receiving orders.
- Keeping follow-up sheets up to date and reporting the data at regular interval to the line manager.
- Supporting the WATSAN team with covering absences of the WATSAN Supervisor or the Waste Zone Technician.
- Working in collaboration with other specialised technicians and workers or, if necessary, managing a small team of workers.
- Assisting with conducting WATSAN training sessions.
- Ensuring the compliance with the applicable MSF protocols, standards and procedures
Water Supply:
- Carrying out regular bacteriological and physico-chemical water analyses and reporting the results.
- Daily checking of water quality parameters, reporting the results and, if necessary, treating the supplied drinking water (chlorination and sedimentation).
- Production of low concentrated chlorine solution using dedicated device.
- Support water trucking acitivities, if necessary.
Wastewater:
- Operating, monitoring and maintaining the sewage treatment unit (STU) and sewer network in Nablus Hospital incl. the unplugging of toilets and pipes.
- Checking and monitoring the operating parameters of the STU as well as optimising its cleaning efficiency.
- Carrying out regular wastewater analyses to monitor the operation of the STU and ensuring the compliance with the prescribed discharge limits. Reporting the results.
- Assisting the team of the Department of Sewage in carrying out measurements and with sample collection.
- Report any problems arising from the incorrect disposal of waste into the sewer network.
- Supervise and support the emptying and cleaning of septic tanks.
Vector Control:
- Assisting with activities in the field of vector control (mice, rats, ants, cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, etc.).
Specific requirements for the role:
Education |
-Essential: Bachelor’s degree in science Water and Sanitation, Civil Engineering or any degree related to the job (for example: Environmental, Chemical). -Desirable: Specialization in WATSAN/ WASH, industrial secondary education or technical diplomas in Water and Sanitation.

Experience |
Essential: -Minimum 1-year hands-on experience in a relevant role. -Experience in operating and maintaining equipment such as pumps, air blowers and sand filters. -Laboratory experience in water and wastewater analysis. Desirable: -Experience in wastewater treatment. -Previous work experience with MSF and/or other INGOs. |
Languages |
- Essential: Fluency in English (minimum B2) and Arabic.

Knowledge |
-Essential: -Computer literacy. -Basic knowledge of mechanics and flair for technical work. -Desirable: Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
